April Skincare Favourites

I try different skincare products all the time.  Between being sent various items for review and being a product junkie that buys new things just to try them out, I have accumulated quite a collection.  That said, every month I tend to gravitate to particular products more than others.
This month was kind of crazy for me (I know I say that every month...).  With school being done, stress levels have come down to normal so I am finding my skin less oily.  I am getting more sleep and drinking more water, so the texture of my skin is softer and my eyes are less puffy.  Lastly, I have been traveling on both personal and work trips, so the my skin has been constantly adjusting to different climates and humidity levels.
Given these changes, I have a few go-to products that have been essential to keeping my skin hydrated, moisturized and clear.  I have to warn you though, I am putting this post together I am realizing that most of these products are from Marcelle.  I really wasn't intending on making this an all-about-Marcelle post, it was just a coincidence that ended up being great products that I wanted to use everyday.

That said, here's what I use for my typical routine:

I don't have a real photo of these because I ran out of them a few nights ago :(
These cloths are awesome.  Before I wash my face every night, I use the soft side to remove makeup (including eye makeup) and then use the exfoliating side to rub around my nose, on my forehead and lightly on the cheeks.  The exfoliator is nice and gentle so I am not too worried about using it everyday.

Typically, after using the cloths I use a dime-sized portion of this cleansing gel to wash my face.   With water, it turns into a foam (I love foaming cleansers).  Lately, because I am out of the cloths, I've been using this as my makeup remover as well.  I am really impressed with how well it removes mascara and eye liner with just a small amount.  I still like to use a makeup remover before washing my face, but it's great to know that this can be used for both!

Moisturizing (Nighttime): Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer
My friend Daniel gave me this travel-size moisturizer to try out - it's my first try at Kiehl's product and so far I really like it.  I apply a pea size amount (that's all you really need) to my face and neck each night before bed and find my skin is quite radiant (and not oily, which is typical for me) in the morning.  Because it's a nice travel size, this is the moisturizer I've been using for night and day when I am on the road.

I love this stuff.  Instead of washing my face again in the morning, I splash my face with cold water and spray this on dry skin.  It's made with organic ingredients (grapefruit, orange, ginger and lemon balm essential oils and extracts, seaweed extract, vitamin E) that make a delicious citrus smell that's very refreshing in the morning.  I feel like this toner helps to restore balance in my skin and prepares it for moisturizing.

I like to use a lighter, more gel-like moisturizer in the mornings.  Because I tend to get oily throughout the day, I find a lighter moisturizer lets my makeup sit better on my skin and allows me to go longer periods of time without having to touch up with a powder.  This moisturizer from Marcelle is perfect because it also contains a mattifying component which helps with unwanted shine.  You can see I use this a lot as I'm almost done :(

Lastly, I've been trying out the George's Light Moisturizing Lotion for the past few days - I keep it beside my computer to moisturize my hands every few hours.

So far I am liking the light version.  The regular cream is a little heavy for everyday use (for me) so I am going to try to use it only on my feet before going to bed.  I'll let you know how it goes.

The one thing I am missing from my skincare routine is an eye cream.  I've dabbled with a few that I have liked, but lately (for no particular reason) have stopped using them.  My goal for May will be to find a good eye cream and incorporate it into my daily skincare routine.  Do you have any recommendations?

I also want to remind you that I have changed the location of my Facebook Page!
I post a lot of photos, events, mini reviews on there to make up for blog posts I can't get around to writing :)  Hope you enjoy!

Spring Colours, Jeans for Tall People, and a FOTD Challenge

I'm usually the one who holds on to the Fall/Winter seasons.  I love everything about the Fall (not so much the Winter) so when the season starts to change and weather gets warmer, a little part of me wishes it would just be October again.  Call me crazy...but I was definitely made for the Fall.

For some reason I am getting more excited about Spring/Summer this year.  I'm going on vacation on Saturday and was forced to dig up all of my hot-season clothes.  Out came a coral cardigan I got last summer...and I was totally inspired to wear it today.  Because I can be business-casual at work, I decide to toss it on top of a silk blouse and a pair of wide-leg jeans.  In turn, I got le outfit:

Do you remember this sweater from last year?  It's from Ricki's - the relatively cheap store that has crazy online deals during which you can find one or two nice pieces for casual work wear :)

The blouse is from Jacob - bought it in the Fall.

The jeans...let's talk about the jeans for a sec.  I am 5'10", and tend to wear heels often.  This makes it hard for me to shop at regular stores for pants that actually fit.  My ideal inseam is 36" - ya try finding at a regular store!  My sister encouraged me to try out longtallsally.com.  I was hesitant to buy jeans online at first, but after I had seen a pair she ordered, I decided to try it out.  With a retail location very close to my work, I figured I could return them at no cost...might as well try.
Ummmmmmmm...the jeans (above) fit like a glove!  The waist is true to size, the length is amazing and the jeans totally rock.  I know they are hard to see in the photos above, but I'll try to get a better shot of them another time.  These are a great pair of jeans for work or casual wear, and I can wear my 4" heels with them!
Hooray for tall-girl clothing!!!!

Have you ever ordered a pair of jeans online?  Would you, ever?

I must also talk about the lipstick. Firstly, are you following Nymphette's FOTD challenge? It's quite clever:

I've been posting a few photos on the Rock That Look Facebook Page, so go there to check it out (shameless promotion, I know). I won't be able to do all of the looks, but when I can, I'll post em'!

Today's challenge was "Shop Your Stash"...so when it came time for lipstick, I dug out a wayback playback..."Sex Pistol" from Emani Minerals.

I totally forgot about this guy!  What a great shade for Spring, right?  So glad I re-found him :)
When you have excessive amounts of makeup like I do, it's a handy practice to shop your own stash...it's so easy to fall into the trap of wearing your most recent purchases.  I must remember to go digging more often!

When was the last time you shopped your stash?
Find anything interesting?

Also, let me know if you are also doing Nymphette's FOTD Challenge, I'd love to follow your photos!

Anyway, it's 2:30am and I should probably try to sleep. Night owl at her finest.

FrizzyHairProblems: You look like the girl from The Grudge

I actually look scary when I wake up after going to bed with wet hair:

The problem:

When I posted this pic on Instagram, one of my followers likened it to the girl from "The Grudge" - hahahaha...awesome (not awesome).

When you only have 25 minutes to fix such a problem, get ready and leave the house, what's a girl to do?  Taking a quick scan of the products I had, I grabbed these and got to work:

The tools:

What I used (from L to R):
Moroccan Oil has been in my life for 2 years now.  I wrote a review back in August, and while I look back on that review, I wonder why I don't use it regularly as I should?  It's a grease-free oil that helps repair damage and keep hair healthy and hydrated.  Perhaps if I use it more often, I wont wake up looking like a horror movie villain?

Teasing Comb - this teasing comb was $3.99 at Rexall, in fact I think it even came in a pack of two :)  A comb like this is an essential in my hair-care collection.  I love crazy volume and can only achieve it with excessive back-combing.  And I'm totally okay with that.

The zebra-print Amika Styler has also been a part of my life for two years now. If you've been reading my blog, you've seen numerous looks as a result of this styler.  In my opinion, it's the ultimate curling iron/rod.  Heats up super fast, and creates an unbelievable curl.

L'Oreal Volume Collagen Body Boost Root Lifting Spray (try saying that 10x fast)... This is a new purchase.  I was looking for a volumizing spray to use when blow-drying my hair and decided to test this out.  I'd like to try it a few more times before giving an official review, but for now I think it's worthy of it's name.

L'Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray - this is also a new purchase.  I needed a new hairspray and was looking for something with strong but flexible hold.  I picked up the option for colour-treated hair - considering I just re-dyed my entire head, I thought it would be a good choice.  Again, I want to give it a few more days before writing an official review, but so far it does the job :)

Using these products, I basically transformed my hair in a matter of 10 minutes.

The result:

The Process:

  1. After brushing my hair, I applied a generous portion of Moroccan Oil to my entire head.  This helped reduce the frizz while providing a protective barrier for the heat that was going to be applied.
  2. I sprayed my roots with the L'Oreal Volumizing Spray, then flipped my hair upside down and used my fingers to shake it out from the roots - this helped to spread the product and give my roots a tiny little boost.
  3. I used the Amika Styler to curl two-inch pieces of hair, all around my head (wrapped each piece around the rod and held for 5-7 seconds before letting them loose).
  4. I used the teasing comb to back-comb my hair around the crown of my head.  Then I ran my fingers through my hair to separate some of the curls - this helped keep the look more casual...it's a Sunday afterall!
  5. I sprayed the L'Oreal Elnett Satin hairspray all over to give it a strong (but flexible) hold.
It literally took me 10 minutes to complete this transformation:

Because I was rushed, it wasn't perfect, but at least it was presentable!  And I wasn't called "the girl from The Grudge" again (at least not that I know of!).

I like to think that it doesn't have to take a lot of time and work to look good.  The right tools and products will work with you, not against you!

...would you agree?
